The Last Hurrah and Happy Halloween

It's the end of our season for the Shea Flower Farm. These are our last flowers for 2026. Once these bouquets are gone from the flower stand, the Shea Flower Farm stand will disappear until next spring.

We are thrilled that we were able to supply cut flowers this late in the season thanks to our dahlias that were able to survive the first frost even though it came fairly early this year on October 7th.
We constructed a 4 foot tall wall of frost cloth over our dahlias which kept the frost from rolling down the hill over our field. Most flowers on the downhill side of the frost wall survived. When I removed
the frost cloth at 9am the morning after the frost, it was covered with a sheet of ice. But protecting the flowers in the field that one night enabled us to keep harvesting dahlias until October 17th. Hooray!

I've also been scraping frost off the flower stand most mornings for the last few weeks and bringing the flowers in at night. My husband is irritated that I'm still running our walk-in cooler when it dips below freezing at night. He'll be happy now that the cooler can be turned off and he can winterize the air conditioner before the snow flies.
Now we are busy digging the dahlia tubers up out of the field and bringing them inside to divide the clumps and protect them over the winter until next spring when they will get planted out again.
It was great to be able to keep the stand open all the way until Halloween so that our orange 'Cheerleader' and coppery 'Sienna Bronze' mums could have their special day.
If you still have vases or mason jars that you would like to return (or donate!) we would be thrilled to have them. You can leave them where the flower stand was even if it isn't there anymore.
Thanks for a fantastic season. See you in the spring of 2027!
